Telecom Italia connects fibre to five more Calabrian towns

Telecom Italia has rolled out fibre services in five additional towns in the Calabria region as part of a €100 million deployment. The telco announced that it had flicked the switch, making the service available in Locri, Crotone, Castrovillari, Corigliano Calabro and Palmi.

The firm added that customers in the connected areas would be able to access the internet at speeds of at least 50Mbps, increasing to up to 100Mbps in the future. The operator's fibre broadband services are currently available at the promotional rates of €29 per month for consumers and €35 for businesses for the first 6 and 12 months respectively.

Telstra customers hit with phishing emails

A series of scams have been despatched to more than 22,000 Telstra customers, including copies of what appeared to be legitimate Telstra email bills.
The emails suggested that customers had paid their Telstra bill twice and could redeem a refund, directing them to log into their 'My Account' portal via a link embedded within the email.

Telstra said cyber criminals had been particularly active of late and urged customers to be aware of these kinds of fraudulent emails and refrain from responding. “These emails can look very authentic, often including logos and slogans to trick you into opening them,” said the firm's national security Advisor Rachael Falk. “They often contain a link or an attachment which is designed to entice you into clicking on it... if a customer receives either of these phishing emails we advise them not to click on the links or attachments and immediately delete the email from their email account.”

The phoney emails are distinguishable by the absence of a “$” sign to describe the amount of money customers are told they paid twice and for which they'd be entitled to pocket a refund.

EU signs off on Nokia purchase of Alcatel-Lucent

Nokia has announced that it has received approval from the European Commission for its pending acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent. The proposed transaction was notified to the European Commission on 19 June and was approved without conditions following a Phase 1 review.

Clearing of the purchase by the European Commission followed previously disclosed antitrust approval procedures in Brazil and Serbia and the expiration of the antitrust review period in the United States. In addition, the parties confirmed that they had received further antitrust clearances from Albania, Canada, Colombia and Russia.

Voda Aust boosts staff parental leave benefits, supports domestic violence victims

Vodafone Australia has unveiled a suite of initiatives to support employees taking paid parental leave including an option to work four days a week and to be paid for five. And, coinciding with International Women’s Day, the firm also released a new policy offering ten days additional paid leave for employees experiencing domestic violence.

Vodafone said that the paid parental leave components were part of a global policy, adding that employees at the firm’s 30 operating companies in Africa, the Middle East, the Asia-Pacific region, Europe and the US would have access to these benefits. It noted that the domestic violence leave changes were a Vodafone Australia initiative.

CEO Inaki Berroeta said the initiatives were being introduced at a Group level, which he said made Vodafone one of the first organisations in the world to introduce a mandatory minimum global maternity policy.
“Returning to work after a period of parental leave can be challenging,” said Berroeta. “To help parents with this transition we’re allowing primary caregivers to work four days per week, but still receive five days' pay for six months.”
Berroeta said the firm wanted to enable staff wishing to return to work after the arrival of a child. “We really value our staff, and this benefit encourages and supports women and parents to keep working with [us].”

In addition, Vodafone is increasing the period of paid parental leave from 14 to 16 weeks for primary caregivers, with employees continuing to accumulate bonus and super while on paid parental leave.  “By extending the level of support available to employees both on paid parental leave and on their return to work, we hope parents will be able to better balance their work, family and financial commitments,” added Berroeta.

Vodafone employees facing domestic violence will also have access to up to ten additional days of paid leave per year. “We recognise that the terrible reality of domestic violence can affect an individual’s ability to attend work or perform their duties, and it is important employees experiencing assault or abuse know they’re being supported,” said Berroeta. “The wellbeing of our employees is one of our highest priorities, and we’re determined to ensure they are supported and not disadvantaged due to personal circumstances.”

The firm cited KPMG research that indicated that global businesses could save up to an estimated $19 billion annually through the provision of 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave.

Huawei taps former BP CEO to chair new local British board

Huawei has appointed former BP chief exec Lord Browne as the first chairman of its newly created local British board. The formation of the UK board headed by a high-profile public figure followed the model Huawei has pioneered in Australia since 2011 when it appointed former admiral John Lord, ex-foreign minister Alexander Downer and former Victorian premier John Brumby to its first ever local board.

Optus network glitch wakes Queensland users hour early

Optus has apologised following a technical glitch that saw its Queensland customers’ clocks set an hour ahead. The fault affected people on the Optus and Virgin networks, mostly around Brisbane, who used their mobiles as alarm clocks.

“Due to a technical issue, selected Optus customers in Southern Queensland temporarily saw their mobile clocks changed to an hour ahead,” said an Optus spokesperson, adding that the issue was now resolved and that all mobiles were back to the accurate time.

Telstra outage brings down BigPond services

A major power outage at Telstra’s St. Leonards datacentre in Sydney has affected the telco’s BigPond ADSL and Wireless Data customers across the country who took to social media to report the issue. The telco’s support lines struggled to process the flow of calls from customers requiring assistance, resulting in wait times of more than an hour.

Telstra confirmed that an outage had occurred in the early hours on Wednesday and noted that widespread issues impacting on customers in New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Victoria had been resolved.  Customers experiencing problems connecting were advised to reboot their network hardware.

“During planned works on the power system in parts of the St Leonards New South Wales datacentre, power was switched over to the standby unit which unfortunately failed,” said a Telstra spokesperson. “While the main power source and the majority of services were restored as quickly as possible, there are still a number of applications we are working to restore.”

The spokesperson added that Telstra was still investigating why the backup power failed. “We are currently [also] experiencing issues with some of our online applications,” the spokesperson noted. These are understood to have included BigPond Online Catalogue, MyAccount, LiveChat, and Boost Prepaid.

Telstra expects Christmas network traffic to go ballistic

Australian telco Telstra is expecting mobile data traffic to increase by 30% on last year with more Aussies than ever connecting to all and sundry, sharing pictures, video and text messages and checking their various social media accounts on their existing and brand new digital devices they may have found in their Christmas stockings.

However, the firm did note that surprisingly 10% more people than last year will opt for a more traditional way to connect, choosing their fixed or mobile phone for a bit of a  natter over the holidays. "Over the past 12 months we improved our 4G network and added new 4GX technology to help our customers connect faster, more easily and in more places,” said director mobility Scott McGibbony.

He added that network traffic would peak, rising 300% between 11pm and 1am on New Year’s Eve, while Christmas Eve remained the most popular time for phone calls and New Year’s Eve would top the bill for text messages sent.
